Rob Murat - So Much to Say
<p> In the brave new musical world of 2008, there are more chances than ever to be surprised when the mail comes in.  An abounding new generation of talented artists has arrived, under the radar of broadcast radio and <strong><em>USA Today</em></strong>.  And just as a reviewer can be disappointed (even depressed) by the fiftieth album of 70s soul remakes by an aging star, one can be equally blown away when the post office brings a CD by a new artist showing the kind of left-field creativity and musical vision that gets even cynical music observers excited all over again.  Fortunately, NY- <p><a href="http://feeds.soultracks.com/~a/st-news?a=JYm2S3"><img src="http://feeds.soultracks.com/~a/st-news?i=JYm2S3" border="0"></img></a></p><div class="feedflare"> <a href="http://feeds.soultracks.com/~f/st-news?a=lfEP6J"><img src="http://feeds.soultracks.com/~f/st-news?i=lfEP6J" border="0"></img></a> </div><img src="http://feeds.soultracks.com/~r/st-news/~4/346119468" height="1" width="1"/>

Gerald Albright - Sax for Stax
<p> For over 20 years now, session musician-turned solo superstar saxophonist Gerald Albright has become synonymous with smooth and sultry music; performing with an impressive list of who's who in jazz and R&amp;B (Quincy Jones, Teena Marie, Phil Collins and Chaka Khan, to name a few), Mr. Albright has accomplished the feat of making his main instrument---the sax---as expressive as any vocal, which is why his thirteenth release, <em>Sax For Stax,</em> is such a delectable listen. </p> <p><a href="http://feeds.soultracks.com/~a/st-news?a=VWVXRa"><img src="http://feeds.soultracks.com/~a/st-news?i=VWVXRa" border="0"></img></a></p><div class="feedflare"> <a href="http://feeds.soultracks.com/~f/st-news?a=Gcf1IJ"><img src="http://feeds.soultracks.com/~f/st-news?i=Gcf1IJ" border="0"></img></a> </div><img src="http://feeds.soultracks.com/~r/st-news/~4/341889700" height="1" width="1"/>
Marzette Griffith - And Now Marzette
<p> Two types of artists make steppers music - those who are actually trying to make music for the steppers set and those who are just trying to make good music. The Baltimore based group Marcell and the Truth fall into the latter category. Their album &quot;Hopes Too High&quot; is filled with music fusing soul, swing jazz and funk that is favored by DJ's who play steppers music and the fans who love the genre. <p> Thanks to the super-efficient promo department at Manhattan Records, I've been living with <em>Livin' It</em> for quite some time now and my conclusion remains unchanged from the first time I played it through three months ago: <em>Livin' It</em> is a superior major label debut for Philadelphia-based artist Mutlu. If <em>Livin' It</em> was a vinyl album, I wouldn't even have to lift the needle up except to flip the record over or replay any one of the album's ten solid, hook-laden songs. In fact, its 40-minute running time is just <em>begging</em> for a vinyl release. </p> <p><a href="http://feeds.soultracks.com/~a/st-news?a=G4QQqw"><img src="http://feeds.soultracks.com/~a/st-news?i=G4QQqw" border="0"></img></a></p><div class="feedflare"> <a href="http://feeds.soultracks.com/~f/st-news?a=FZH8qJ"><img src="http://feeds.soultracks.com/~f/st-news?i=FZH8qJ" border="0"></img></a> </div><img src="http://feeds.soultracks.com/~r/st-news/~4/341889701" height="1" width="1"/>
Lori Dow - Love Changes
<p> <strong><em>Love Changes</em></strong>, Lori Dow's latest record, is a testament to the virtue of patience. I could say that <strong><em>Love Change</em></strong>s grew on me. However, saying something &quot;grew on you&quot; implies that the record is not very good, and that I listened to the record so long that I convinced myself that <strong><em>Love Changes </em></strong>is better than it actually is. That is not the case. This is a solid but understated recording, and you have to listen in order to fully appreciate the album's many virtues. <p><a href="http://feeds.soultracks.com/~a/st-news?a=7C5OZP"><img src="http://feeds.soultracks.com/~a/st-news?i=7C5OZP" border="0"></img></a></p><div class="feedflare"> <a href="http://feeds.soultracks.com/~f/st-news?a=OEhh5J"><img src="http://feeds.soultracks.com/~f/st-news?i=OEhh5J" border="0"></img></a> </div><img src="http://feeds.soultracks.com/~r/st-news/~4/341889702" height="1" width="1"/>

Leon Ware - Moon Ride (Advance Review)
It's very likely that more people know Leon Ware's music than know than know the artist himself. There's a good reason for that. Ware has made some of the most recognizable and high quality soul and pop music of the last two generations. He co-wrote &quot;I Wanna Be Where You Are,&quot; the Michael Jackson song that was on endless rotation on my parent's Hi-Fi stereo in the summer of 1972. Ware wrote &quot;Inside My Love,&quot; the Minnie Ripperton soul classic that got introduced to a new generation when Trina Broussard remade it for the &quot;Love Jones&quot; soundtrack in the late 1990s. <p><a href="http://feeds.soultracks.com/~a/st-news?a=880VQ5"><img src="http://feeds.soultracks.com/~a/st-news?i=880VQ5" border="0"></img></a></p><div class="feedflare"> <a href="http://feeds.soultracks.com/~f/st-news?a=OOGlGJ"><img src="http://feeds.soultracks.com/~f/st-news?i=OOGlGJ" border="0"></img></a> </div><img src="http://feeds.soultracks.com/~r/st-news/~4/338485301" height="1" width="1"/>

Various Artists - Soul Unsigned EP:002
<p> What can I say about this EP? If <em><strong>EP:001</strong></em> was the entrée, <em><strong>EP:002</strong></em> is proof that when the main course drops we are going to be truly fed.  The funky beats, soulful grooves, melodic voices continue on this, the second EP from Phil Driver's concept of bringing together unsigned artists and just showcasing what they can do.  </p> <p><a href="http://feeds.soultracks.com/~a/st-news?a=zm1vb4"><img src="http://feeds.soultracks.com/~a/st-news?i=zm1vb4" border="0"></img></a></p><div class="feedflare"> <a href="http://feeds.soultracks.com/~f/st-news?a=pnlgZJ"><img src="http://feeds.soultracks.com/~f/st-news?i=pnlgZJ" border="0"></img></a> </div><img src="http://feeds.soultracks.com/~r/st-news/~4/335524256" height="1" width="1"/>

Byron Cage - Live at the Apollo: The Proclamation
After listening to <em><strong>Live At The Apollo: The Proclamation</strong></em>, there is little doubt that, for Bryon Cage, praise and worship is the best way to experience God at the highest level. More than evident in his music, one can witness this belief revealed in Cage's stylistic choices and decision as the Minister of Music for two of the nation's most prolific mega-churches. Under Cage's prophetic direction and emphasis on praise and worship, both music ministries have undergone successful transformations. <p><a href="http://feeds.soultracks.com/~a/st-news?a=70moGC"><img src="http://feeds.soultracks.com/~a/st-news?i=70moGC" border="0"></img></a></p><div class="feedflare"> <a href="http://feeds.soultracks.com/~f/st-news?a=4QKrDJ"><img src="http://feeds.soultracks.com/~f/st-news?i=4QKrDJ" border="0"></img></a> </div><img src="http://feeds.soultracks.com/~r/st-news/~4/337576760" height="1" width="1"/>

Sergio Mendes - Encanto
Between the British music invasion and a soul making hit factory, the pop music landscape was blossoming during the sixties, boosted by <strong><em>American Bandstand,</em></strong> the weekly TV hit parade hosted by music impresario Dick Clark.  Some important plateaus included the foundation of Motown, also dubbed &quot;Hitsville U.S.A.&quot;  Songwriter Berry Gordy officially opened for business just before 1960 with Barrett Strong's <em>&quot;Money (That's What I</em> <em>Want).&quot;</em>  For those who craved a harder edge in their pop, groups that came to the shores from overseas inc <p><a href="http://feeds.soultracks.com/~a/st-news?a=golykZ"><img src="http://feeds.soultracks.com/~a/st-news?i=golykZ" border="0"></img></a></p><div class="feedflare"> <a href="http://feeds.soultracks.com/~f/st-news?a=3nVwRJ"><img src="http://feeds.soultracks.com/~f/st-news?i=3nVwRJ" border="0"></img></a> </div><img src="http://feeds.soultracks.com/~r/st-news/~4/329285202" height="1" width="1"/>
Malcolm-Jamal Warner - Love & Other Social Issues
Malcolm-Jamal Warner, famous for his acting role as Theo Huxtable on <em>The Cosby Show</em>, performed as a stage, television and film actor for over 20 years and is now an established bass player with a band. As a musician, he has already opened for several known acts such as Earl Klugh and the late Luther Vandross. Ave.To - Three Way Intersection
<p> In this age of infinite musical influences and practically limitless technology, nothing irks a listener (critical or otherwise) more than a stale product, something that's been recycled and cleverly packaged as new when it's already been done to death by others. Ave.To, a melting pot trio out of Washington, D.C., doesn't fall into this category. Their debut, <em>Three Way Intersection,</em> uses the songs as multi-hued quilts threaded with different tones and textures, which includes soul, hip-hop and jazz. </p> <p><a href="http://feeds.soultracks.com/~a/st-news?a=mSdK98"><img src="http://feeds.soultracks.com/~a/st-news?i=mSdK98" border="0"></img></a></p><div class="feedflare"> <a href="http://feeds.soultracks.com/~f/st-news?a=pPsOpJ"><img src="http://feeds.soultracks.com/~f/st-news?i=pPsOpJ" border="0"></img></a> </div><img src="http://feeds.soultracks.com/~r/st-news/~4/329295136" height="1" width="1"/>
Jennie Laws - Introducing Jennie Laws
Some of modern day soul's most engaging artists have come from Canada (<a href="/amel_larrieux.htm">Amel Larrieux</a> and <a href="/glenn_lewis.htm">Glenn Lewis</a> just to name a few). Next up on this growing list is an all around impressive musician named Jennie Laws. Bathed in the spirit of <a href="/alicia_keys.htm">Alicia Keys</a> it seems, Jennie has an impressive soul voice coupled with undeniably robust and heartfelt songwriting skills. <p><a href="http://feeds.soultracks.com/~a/st-news?a=psg6fA"><img src="http://feeds.soultracks.com/~a/st-news?i=psg6fA" border="0"></img></a></p><div class="feedflare"> <a href="http://feeds.soultracks.com/~f/st-news?a=6W5NhJ"><img src="http://feeds.soultracks.com/~f/st-news?i=6W5NhJ" border="0"></img></a> </div><img src="http://feeds.soultracks.com/~r/st-news/~4/329107625" height="1" width="1"/>
Funkatized - Funkatized
<p> The Berlin based duo, Funkatized, strive to broaden the definition of funk on their self-titled album. However, <strong><em>Funkatized</em></strong> is at its best on the songs that tap into the roots of funk. Unfortunately, there aren't enough of those songs on <strong><em>Funkatized</em></strong>. Many of the cuts also draw from techno and house music with a nod toward disco and those songs have a sameness that make a lot of the songs on <strong><em>Funkatized</em></strong> sound monotonous. </p> <p><a href="http://feeds.soultracks.com/~a/st-news?a=QNqvlj"><img src="http://feeds.soultracks.com/~a/st-news?i=QNqvlj" border="0"></img></a></p><div class="feedflare"> <a href="http://feeds.soultracks.com/~f/st-news?a=Lcs8KJ"><img src="http://feeds.soultracks.com/~f/st-news?i=Lcs8KJ" border="0"></img></a> </div><img src="http://feeds.soultracks.com/~r/st-news/~4/329301525" height="1" width="1"/>

<p> When the legendary Stax label was rescued from oblivion by Concord Records in 2007, it was unclear whether the new label leaders would show respect for the incredible Stax history or simply use the recognizable imprint as a means of uniting a series of modern adult soul stars such as Lalah Hathaway, Angie Stone and N'dambi.  The label played its hand early, re-signing Stax veterans Isaac Hayes and Steve Cropper and inking deals other soul legends such as Leon Ware.  And while the economics of modern major label music would call into question the wisdom of releasing the music of artist <p><a href="http://feeds.soultracks.com/~a/st-news?a=VD4QP5"><img src="http://feeds.soultracks.com/~a/st-news?i=VD4QP5" border="0"></img></a></p><div class="feedflare"> <a href="http://feeds.soultracks.com/~f/st-news?a=LTNZxJ"><img src="http://feeds.soultracks.com/~f/st-news?i=LTNZxJ" border="0"></img></a> </div><img src="http://feeds.soultracks.com/~r/st-news/~4/325751964" height="1" width="1"/>
